Vermont: Parents Should Stop Calling Their Children ‘Son’ or ‘Daughter’

The Vermont Department of Health is telling families they should no longer call their sons and daughters, sons or daughters. Instead, they want parents to use gender neutral language.

The taxpayer-funded government agency posted a social media message about “inclusive language for families.” They urge parents to use words like “kid” or “child” instead of son or daughter.

The post encouraged parents to use terms like “family members” rather than “household members” to include incarcerated individuals, step siblings and the like.

“The language we use matters!” the department wrote. “When talking about family, it’s important to use terms that cover the many versions of what family can look like.”

Vermonters are an independent bunch and reaction to the department’s recommendations has been overwhelmingly negative.

“How about letting people say what they want and stop being the woke police? If any of these terms offend you ‘daughter’, ‘family’, etc. then you have the issue, not the person saying it,” one resident wrote. “Imagine thinking anyone cares whether some hippie bureaucrat is offended by normal words.”

Another wrote, “My son will always be my son and my daughter will always be my daughter. This is ridiculous. It is your responsibility as a parent to teach and lead your children. That means teaching them the importance of fact over feelings.”

In response to the outrage, the health department posted a followup message:

“This post was intended to encourage using inclusive language when you don’t know someone’s family situation. This is especially important in settings like classrooms, after school programs and sports teams. Using language that includes everyone helps children feel seen, respected, and valued no matter how their families are structured.”

The Vermont Department of Health has fully embraced “social justice.” And they have a big problem with white folks.

“Vermonters who identify as white and heterosexual, who are non-disabled, live in urban or suburban areas, or are middle or upper class generally have better health compared to other Vermonters. These are health inequities and together with our partners we are committed to addressing them,” the agency wrote on its website.

They say their key values include equity, inclusion and harmony. It sounds like the Coca-Cola commercial from the 1970’s.

“We aim to center health justice and address racism and all forms of oppression in our programs and policies, our approach to collaboration, and how we build and nurture our workforce,” the site reads in part.

In that spirit, the government agency posited a number of questions like, “Why is Vermont so overwhelmingly white?” Perhaps the better question to ask is why is Vermont so overwhelmingly woke?  CLICK HERE to order my new book “Twilight’s Last Gleaming: Can America Be Saved?”
