The Supreme Court will hear arguments Wednesday in a case that could decide whether the state of Tennessee can ban transgender surgeries and hormone treatments for minors.
Tennessee Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson is “cautiously optimistic” the Supreme Court will uphold the state ban he co-authored, describing the ongoing legal battle as a “test case for the nation.”
“Tennessee’s law that I sponsored will effectively be the test case for the nation. So we’re very excited, humbled and cautiously optimistic that the Supreme Court will see it as the Sixth Circuit did,” Johnson told The New York Post.
It is the marquee case of the term, The New York Times reported.
“The court’s decision, expected by June, may determine not only the fate of the law and similar ones in more than 20 other states but also what role the Constitution’s equal protection clause has to play in cases claiming discrimination against transgender individuals,” the Times said.
Chase Strangio, a bearded woman who identifies as a man, will become the first openly transgender attorney to argue before the high court during oral arguments this week. She is deputy director for transgender justice at the American Civil Liberties Union.
Strangio told CNN’s Jake Tapper that she believes children as young as two-years-old know that they are “transgender.” Watch the video above.
“This person is telling the Supreme Court children can be sterilized and mutilated as minors and states have no ability to stop it,” Megyn Kelly wrote on X. “She poses as a man (unconvincingly) and clearly wants to feel validated by your child doing it, too.”
