The U.S. Coast Guard is advising beachgoers not go into the water after two shark bite incidents and two additional encounters were reported.

“The lifeguards were trying to get people out of the water and everyone’s yelling to come out,” eyewitness Ashley Silva told CBS News. “It was a pretty scary sight with all the blood and everything.”

South Padre Island Fire Chief Jim Pigg says the attacks caught them by surprise.

“I’ve lived here 14 years, I’ve never seen anything like this,” Pigg told television stat KRGV.

Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr. called the attacks a “horrendous event.”

“The County wants to extend its thoughts and prayers to the victims and families of these extremely rare and unusual attacks,” said Treviño. “The County is working closely with Mayor Patrick McNulty, the City of South Padre Island, and our state and federal partners to patrol the beaches and take appropriate action.”
