It might be a good idea to forego the deli section of your local supermarket for the next little while. There’s been a nationwide listeria outbreak involving Boar’s Head meat.
At least 9 people are dead and dozens more have been hospitalized.
It’s the largest listeriosis outbreak since 2011, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Just last month Boar’s Head recalled all deli meats made at its plant in Jarratt, Virginia and that’s where USDA inspectors believe the outbreak originated.
The inspectors found mold and mildew in the plant where your ham and bologna are prepared. They also found bugs – lots of bugs – on nearly 1,000 pounds of ham. They also found leftover meat on equipment.
In recent years Boar’s Head has touted its commitment to hiring non-Americans. That’s all well and good – but are the non-Americans being taught to comply with American standards.
Never thought I’d say this – but it might be a good idea to go vegan.
