House Speaker Mike Johnson has removed a measure that would have forced anyone voting in federal elections to provide proof of U.S. citizenship. Johnson’s decision is a stunning betrayal of conservatives and the American people.

As Fox News reports, “the new measure, closer in line with what Senate Democrats and the White House had called for than his first plan, is likely to spark fury among the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus and its allies. But most Republicans are wary of the backlash of a potential government shutdown just weeks before Election Day.”
Last May Johnson was a fierce advocate of the SAVE Act and said it was necessary to stop illegals from voting in U.S. elections.
“It’s clear that our election process is worth protecting. It is our responsibility as members of Congress and concerned leaders of citizens groups and organizations who care about the integrity of our system and our elections,” Johnson said at the time.
“It is our duty to ensure that this is done. Even if you weren’t concerned about the drop boxes and the ballot harvesting and the mail in ballots and 2020, you definitely should be concerned that illegal aliens might be voting in 2024. And that’s why it is critical that we pass the SAVE act to safeguard our federal elections and ensure that only Americans get to decide American elections,” he added.
So, not only did Johnson cave on the SAVE Act, but his compromise with Democrats will continue funding the government at levels set by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Not a single penny has been cut from the budget.
The American people were played by Speaker Johnson and his political theater. And there’s a very good chance the Republicans could lose control of the House after the November election.
