It was a historic night in the Hawkeye state for President Donald Trump.
The former president crushed his Republican opponents in the Iowa Caucus – with a record-smashing 51 percent of the vote. Trump won 98 out of 99 counties.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis placed a distant second while Ambassador Nikki Haley came in third place. Vivek Ramaswamy suspended his campaign and endorsed Trump.
“I really think this is time now for everybody — our country, to come together,” Trump told supporters in a speech that was both inspirational and conciliatory. “We’re going to put America first, we’re going to make America great again… Iowa, we love you!”
Trump extended an olive branch to his fellow candidates, thanking both Haley and DeSantis. He said Ramaswamy did a “hell of a job.” There was no name calling.
“I feel really invigorated and strong for our country,” Trump told Fox News Digital after the network projected that he had won.
In a statement, Alex Pfeiffer, a spokesperson for the main super political action committee supporting Trump, said, “The people of Iowa sent a clear message tonight: Donald Trump will be the next Republican nominee for President. It’s now time to make him the next President of the United States.”
DeSantis said he will continue the race. On Sunday he told ABC News that he knows “elected officials who encouraged me to run and say they’re going to vote for me in a primary, but yet have endorsed Donald Trump.”
If that is true – it explains everything that is wrong with the Republican Party. Lawmakers who tell voters one thing to get elected and do another when they get the job. Vile snakes.
The problem with the GOP is not Donald Trump. He is the solution. The problem is feckless candidates who lie to voters and who stab them in the back.
I have no idea which lawmakers Gov. DeSantis is talking about, but why would he even want their support?
How does he know they haven’t struck the same sort of deal with Haley or Ramaswamy? If you don’t support President Trump just man up and be honest with the voters. Don’t be a backstabbing liar. Don’t take the cowards way out.
President Trump tonight was a man who was gracious in victory. He extended an olive branch to his competitors and he rightly called on the Republican party to set aside differences and unite behind his campaign.
If that happens, I guarantee that we will make America great again.
