Christians Banned From Holding Bible Study in Library’s Community Room

There’s big trouble brewing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

They’ve long had a history of cracking down on religious liberty. Roger Williams was banished from Massachusetts in 1635 – for speaking out against the Church of England.

Fast forward to the year 2024 when a local government banned a church from using a public library’s community meeting room. The town also ordered that the local newspaper remove an ad promoting the church.

American Center for Law and Justice is representing the church. They have a longstanding policy of not naming plaintiffs or defendants until lawsuits have actually been filed.

So, we are unable to share the particulars.

Initially, the library director told our client that he could meet for the biweekly time he requested. But then she sent him a follow-up email claiming that, according to “the Town Administration and Legal Counsel,” the meeting rooms of the library can only “be used for occasional events but not for recurring events like bi-monthly Bible studies.” Her statement directly contradicted library policy. Our client sent follow-up letters trying to reserve the room and to figure out whether the library would let him use it at all. But he received no response. At this time, he has still not received any confirmation of any ability to use the space, whether for occasional use or for recurring events.

When the church was banned from holding Bible studies in the community room, they decided to meet in the town park – on the grass. Town leaders objected.

Both are instances of egregious violations of the Constitution. We will keep you updated on developments.

Should Christians be allowed to use the same community rooms as non-Christians?
