New Mexico Governor Michelle Grisham issued an emergency order suspending open and concealed carry across the state. The governor is a Democrat. She says she has the right to suspend the Second Amendment under a health emergency – which she declared.
The governor said none of our constitutional rights are intended to be absolute.
“No constitutional right in my view, including my oath, is intended to be absolute,” Gov. Grisham said at a press conference.
In other words, she believes she has the power to also suspend freedom of the press and freedom of religion.
Stunned reporters asked the governor how she could justify arresting a citizen walking down the street with a concealed-carry permit
“I can make the point that maybe they should be (arrested),” the governor said.
“If there’s an emergency, and i’ve declared an emergency…I can invoke additional powers,” the governor declared. “No constitutional right in my view, including my oath, is intended to be absolute.”
Albuquerque city councilman Dan Lewis called on the governor to rescind the order.
“If the governor does not rescind this order, I’m calling on law enforcement to follow the constitution and not unconstitutional edicts from a wannabe dictator,” Lewis told the Santa Fe New Mexican. “Law enforcement officers took an oath to defend the constitution.”
This is not the first time that a government leader tried to confiscate the weapons of law-abiding citizens. It also happened in 1775. The British dispatched hundreds of Redcoats to Lexington, Massachusetts.
They were under orders to confiscate all their guns and ammo. But the good patriots of Lexington said no. And what happened next became the shot heard round the world.
The American Revolution began over a government mandated gun grab.
Governor Grisham would do well to remember that.
