A Louisiana widower is suing the parents of four teenagers who were recently convicted of carjacking and killing his wife in March 2022, according to New Orleans local news outlet WWL Louisiana.
As part of a civil lawsuit, Rickey Frickey is seeking $50,000 over the loss of his 73-year-old wife, emotional distress, and loss of income, Fox News reports.
Frickey’s attorney Donald Hodge said Louisiana state law may hold parents responsible for their children’s actions. “I think it’s part of the larger issue of understanding what may happen to parents if they’re not involved trying to ensure these things don’t happen,” he told WWL.
The group of teenagers, three of which pleaded guilty to manslaughter and the fourth convicted of second-degree murder, dragged the victim, Linda Frickey, behind her own vehicle for 700 feet, punched her, and severed her arm, prosecutors stated during the recent criminal trial.
Mr. Frickey’s civil suit was initially filed earlier this year but he paused the process until the court’s criminal proceedings were concluded.
While Hodge is confident a judge will rule in Frickey’s favor, he told local news it may be difficult to execute the judgment and actually obtain the money.
“You don’t squeeze blood out of a turnip,” Frickey’s attorney said, according to WWL and nola.com. “It’s just a matter of who’s going to pay that. We understand the reality here of it may never be paid but I think it’s important for a sense of judgment for Linda as well as to let people know the actions of your children, you’re responsible.”
In a social media post from WGNO-TV, a copy of Mr. Frickey’s lawsuit says the defendants’ actions were “reckless and intentional” and were the proximate cause of “wrongful death, loss of future income … emotional distress and other damages which will be proven at trial.”
As described by Daily Mail, “shocking surveillance footage captured the moment the four youths zeroed in on [Ms. Frickey’s] car, ripping open the door and tearing her out of the vehicle.”
One of the leading perpetrators in the incident, John Honore, faces a mandatory life sentence after jurors met for several hours last week.
