A group of brave young men, along with UNC Chancellor Lee Roberts, saved Old Glory from being desecrated while a mob of pro-Hamas terrorists pummeled the men with bottles. A photo of the moment, which has since gone viral, can be seen below.
Earlier in the day, a pro-Hamas mob had removed the American flag and raised a Palestinian flag. That’s when the young patriots, along with the university’s chancellor sprang into action. When students and the chancellor intervened, the mob hurled bottles and obscenities at the group.
“This university doesn’t belong to a small group of protesters,” Chancellor Roberts said as protesters screamed. “It belongs to every citizen of North Carolina – everybody in North Carolina. The flag represents all of us.”
Police were forced to use tear gas to disperse the raging mob. And several dozen were arrested.
“It’s clear that the university has chosen its side,” Shahad Mustafa, a 21-year-old senior told The New York Times. “They are choosing to still support Israel regardless of what their students are saying. They are showing us that they are willing to use violence and willing to lie.”
The Daily Tar Heel reports that students chanted, “USA, USA” as the chancellor and other male students helped raise the American flag.
“To take down that flag and put up another flag no matter what other flag it is is antithetical to who we are, what this university stands for, what we have done for 229 years,” the chancellor boldly declared.
UNC announced on Tuesday afternoon that classes were canceled and “non-mandatory operations” were suspended for the day.
The scene at UNC Chapel Hill was reminiscent of a moment I write about in “Twilight’s Last Gleaming: Can America Be Saved?” Former President Reagan once noted that our national anthem starts with a question, not a declaration. Is the flag still there? Can you still see the flag flying?
It’s a question that every generation of Americans must answer. Are we willing to stand up and fight for freedom and the values that flag represents?
The students at the University of North Carolina have declared with a resounding, “yes”! The star-spangled banner still waves over the land of the free and the home of the brave.
