The University of Florida rescinded a scholarship offer to a white high school quarterback after video surfaced of the teenager singing along to a rap song that had racially charged lyrics.
Marcus Stokes, of Nease High School in Ponte Vedra Beach, posted a video of himself mimicking the lyric as he rode in a car.
“Welcome back, n—-,” he can be heard saying in the now-deleted two-second clip.
Stokes, who had been a sought-after football prospect, profusely apologized for his behavior.
“I was in my car listening to rap music, rapping along to the words and posted a video of it on social media,” Stokes explained on his Twitter page on Sunday. “I deeply apologize for the words in the song that I chose to say. It was hurtful and offensive to many people, and I regret that.”

The University of Florida did not comment on the matter.
“It would be interesting to know if the university would have rescinded the scholarship offer if Marcus Stokes had been black,” said national radio host Todd Starnes. “That word is incredibly offensive and no one should be using it – black or white. But the hypocrisy is a bit much to overlook.”
Stokes remained contrite — knowing that his football career may have been forever ruined by that two-second video.
“I fully accept the consequences for my actions, and I respect the University of Florida’s decision to withdraw my scholarship offer to play football.”
“My intention was never to hurt anybody and I recognize that even when going along with a song, my words still carry a lot of weight,” he said. “I will strive to be better and to become the best version of myself both on and off the field. I know that learning from my mistakes is a first important step.”
