DEVELOPING STORY: Police have confirmed a gunman opened fire at a high school in Perry, Iowa – just north of Des Moines. The shooting happened on the first day of class after the winter break.
Teacher Lori Meinecke said she heard about six to seven gunshots around 7:40 a.m., followed by the voices of several school coaches encouraging everyone to evacuate the area, according to Raccoon Valley Radio.
At least three people were shot and the gunman reportedly turned the gun on himself.
The alleged gunman is described as a student who identified as “gender fluid.” We will not release the shooter’s name until it is verified by police.
“This is allegedly his tiktok account which was already scrubbed,” Libs of Tik Tok reported. “He posted this photo before the shooting from the school bathroom. He appears to be part of the LGBTQ community with the flag in his bio. In another post he put the hashtag #genderfluid. In another video he acted out a shooting exchange. Obviously a broken, mentally ill person.”
WHO 13 Photographer Jack Johnson is on the scene outside the school near 1200 18th Street and says police and Iowa State Troopers have blocked off the streets surrounding the school. He has seen multiple ambulances entering and leaving the school.
The first call from dispatch was at about 7:37 a.m., according to the. Des Moines Register. Dispatchers said they had access to school cameras and reported seeing something in the west hallway.
A dispatcher advised first responders of “reports of multiple subjects injured at this time,” the newspaper reported.
Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy posted on the social media site X, formerly known as Twitter.
“Pray for the community in Perry, Iowa this morning,” he wrote.
Ramaswamy was hosting a campaign event in Perry on Thursday.
