DEVELOPING STORY: CNN reports that former President Trump was the intended target of an assassination attempt Sunday afternoon at Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The suspect is identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, a man who openly despised President Trump. Routh was something of a celebrity among the mainstream media because of his efforts to convince Americans to fight in Ukraine.
“The Secret Service identified the direction” of the shooter “and returned fire at that gunman, who fled,” CNN Chief Law Enforcement and Intelligence Analyst and former police official John Miller said on the air.
“Witnesses were able to provide a description of an individual and a vehicle. We are told that a vehicle that is close to that description has been stopped” by police,” Miller said, adding that the information he was sharing was preliminary.
Miller also reported that “in the area of the shooting, sources say they recovered a backpack and a semi-automatic rifle … and a GoPro camera,” a device that would suggest “this individual may have wanted to record himself in the first-person.”

Suspect was in the tree line, armed with an AK-47 rifle.
The armed suspect was spotted on the edge of the course, by a member of former President Trump’s U.S. Secret Service’s advance team – two holes ahead from where the president was golfing.
Suspect fled the scene after he was engaged by Secret Service agent with multiple gunshots – the suspect jumped into a car. Secret Service noted the license plate number.
A car with the same license plate number was stopped in Martin County, north of the gun course, and one individual was taken into custody. Unclear if it is the gunman, but it is believed to be. Law enforcement questioning that individual now.
An AK 47 style weapon and scope has been recovered at the scene by the golf course.
FBI is lead – USSS assisting in the investigation.
Secret Service presence around the White House has been bolstered – North fence line is closed down out of an abundance of caution.

PREVIOUS REPORTING: Multiple shots were fired at Trump Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida while the former president was playing golf. President Trump is safe.
“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” Steven Cheung, a spokesman for the Trump Campaign said in a statement.

The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2pET. The former president is safe. Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office will have more details soon.
The New York Times reports:
Teri Barbera, a spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that a shooting took place “on the grounds” of the Trump International Golf Course West Palm Beach while Mr. Trump was present. A “person of interest” has been detained, she said.
“The intent right now is unknown,” Ms. Barbera added. A news conference has been scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
Donald Trump, Jr. said an AK-47 was reportedly discovered in bushes near the golf course. He posted on X that a suspect has been apprehended.
