The JROTC at the local high school in Portage, IN was banned from providing a color guard at a tea party rally after a school board member complained.

Military officials intervened and directed the cadets not to attend the Northwest Indiana Patriot Event.  A spokesman from JROTC headquarters in Washington, D.C., said the tea party event appeared to be a political rally and the military must remain unbiased.

“We want to avoid the appearance of the military leaning towards one side or another, whether it is a conservative or liberal group,” 2nd Lt. Brian Villiard told the Associated Press.

The controversy apparently started when school board member Cheryl Oprisko objected to the teenage cadets from posting the American flag at the rally. She called the tea party group “political” and “extremist” in an interview in the Gary Post-Tribune.

But Faith Jones, an organizer of the tea party event, said it’s not about politics.

“We are not a political party,” Jones told the Associated Press. “We are educating concerned citizens on their constitutional rights. We are nonpartisan.”

Oprisko told local media she was “elated” at the military’s decision and said allowing the kids to participate in a tea party event would put the district in a “bad light.”

“That’s not a place for our students to be involved with,” she told Chicago Public Radio. “It would show a negative light on our school system and on the JROTC program itself.”

  12. We want to avoid the appearance of the military leaning towards one side or another, whether it is a conservative or liberal group,” 2nd Lt. Brian Villiard told the Associated Press. THEREFORE, President Obama should not be making political speeches using the military as a backdrop, as he did when making the announcement about allowing drilling of oil off the coast of Virginia.

  30. What I know is that the JROTC had been on occasion called upon to present colors before a variety of events and only this one was questioned because Ms. Oprisko put political grandstanding above the JROTC and the local commander and had a “buddy” in Washington that jumped authority over the school board and over the JROTC local commander. It is petty partisan politics at its worst. We need to vote out all the Opriskos who place ideology over people and process and authority and, well, you name it. The Constitution?

  31. One of the benefits of shopping online is that it helps consumer saves time. This suits the current lifestyle of most people who are rather busy and have difficulty finding time doing all their shopping at physical stores. With online shopping, they can cut down on their traveling time. Furthermore, if the product they want is not available in the physical store, they need to go to another store to find it. With shopping online, all these inconvenience can be avoided.
